Adam Scott Sent R&A Head a Belly Putter After Anchoring Ban was Initiated
By Michael Shamburger
Adam Scott and his new normal putter were on fire last week at the Northern Trust Open. Scott finished tied for second at -14, just behind winner Bubba Watson, and much of his success at Riviera Country Club was thanks to his putter.
Scott has used a long anchored putter most of his career, but after anchored putters were banned; Scott was forced to change his putting technique. After the ban was put into effect, Scott sent one of his belly putters to the head of the R&A, Peter Dawson, who was one of the main leaders in pushing the ban on anchoring.
"“I actually sent one to Peter Dawson for his retirement,” Scott said Thursday, according to the Associated Press. “He said he greatly appreciated the gesture,” Scott said with a smile. “He said he’d put it with all the other obsolete clubs.”"
Scott has had plenty of success in his career with belly putters; he won the 2013 Masters, finished second at the 2012 Open Championship, finished tied for third at the 2006 PGA Championship and finished tied for fourth at the U.S. Open in 2015.
This season, Scott ranks 74th in strokes gained putting, but last week at the Northern Trust Open, he ranked 15th. Maybe things are starting to pick up for the former world number one.
