It’s a big day for Salvador Perez. The reigning World Series MVP agreed to a five-year, $52.5 million extension with the Kansas City Royals. He also unveiled his humongous tattoo celebrating last fall’s victory.

Perez is an above-average defensive catcher who hits for extra-base power and is the heart and soul of the Royals franchise. But it took getting this gaudy ink for the team to make a long-term commitment to him.

Why?

Because waiting until after a championship is won to get a tattoo is a sign of great intelligence. The internet is full of cautionary tales of overconfident fans permanently and prematurely claiming titles. Perez having the self-control to hold out until he physically led his team to the promised land is a veteran move.
