Oregon State went 2-10 last season, but one bright spot was the play of redshirt freshman Gabe Ovgard. The Oregon native played quarterback, running back and defensive back in high school, but was on the scout team early last season trying to make the team as a receiver. Coach Gary Anderson, in his first year with the program, asked him to try playing safety and Ovgard ended up starting two games, made 23 tackles and even picked off a pass against Cal.

I don’t care how teams do this, but seeing the moment a walk-on is rewarded for his hard work never grows old.

And since it is unlikely I’ll ever find occassion to run a post about Gabe Ovgard again, here’s one of the only pictures I could find of him on USA TODAY Sports Images.
