PETA Responds After Yoenis Cespedes Buys $7,000 Champion Pig, Sends It to Butcher

New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes took a brief break from driving around in fancy cars earlier this week to purchase a 270-pound champion pig. The hog, which was raised by a 4-H club, came with a $7,000 price tag.

But what started as a feel-good story involving charity took a dramatic turn this morning when we learned the pig had been sent to slaughter.

We reached out to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) to see if they had any response to Cespedes’ actions. PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange provided the following statement to The Big Lead:

Yoenis Cespedes can afford $7,000 out of his own pocket, and this loving, loyal, and clever pig is paying the real price with his life. It’s a shame that Cespedes dropped the ball here and missed the opportunity to send this pig to a sanctuary, where he could have lived out his days in peace. We’re sending Cespedes some delicious vegan bacon in the hope that he’ll open his heart, not clog it with pig fat.
