Gus Malzhan turned 50 last October. He did what wealthy 50-year-olds do, buy a $140,000 sports car. It’s a BMW i8 with scissor doors. He’s been using it to impress 16 and 17-year-old boys who are good at football.

"“When (Malzahn) pulled up, he came over to me and whispered in my ear, ‘That’s my new ride,'” Bishop told AL.com in February. “He was like, ‘Before you leave I want to spin a few blocks with you.’ Before the basketball game he came and got me and told me a little bit about the car and we drove.”"

We probably would have saved a bit of money, bought a slightly used Porsche 911 Turbo with a stick and a Prius for the daily commute, but to each his own.

In case you were worried about Malzahn soiling the environment for his own joy-riding, the i8 is a Hybrid that gets 76 mpg.

We can all hope buying expensive, ridiculous supercars becomes the next college football coach arms race.
