Brock Osweiler signed a four-year deal with Houston that will be worth $72 million if he plays well enough, but we need to see what amount is fully guaranteed before specifically evaluating what type of deal he got.

In any event, with that news and Peyton Manning’s retirement earlier this week, the defending Super Bowl champion Broncos are in dire need of a quarterback. Even before they lost Osweiler, rumors were swirling about Colin Kaepernick:

With Osweiler gone, free agent RG3’s name also came up:

Either of these options would arguably be better for Denver than Osweiler was. At the very least, John Elway’s track record as an executive reinforces the notion that he felt there were viable alternatives.

Kaepernick remains under contract with the 49ers, where he would seem to be a fit with Chip Kelly’s system, but is purportedly dissatisfied with all the knives that came out after him when the season went downhill last year.

It remains to be seen whether his career can be salvaged, but the robust organization in Denver and a great defense to take some of the pressure off would seem to be a great fit. What would the Broncos have to give up in a trade, and would they be willing to part with it?

RG3 is also a question mark. He did not see any action on the field last regular season. While he was able to stay above the fray of drama in Washington this past year, he has struggled to stay healthy since the end of his electric rookie year.

Nevertheless, whether Denver opts to go with RG3, Colin Kaepernick, or somebody else, it’s presumable that they will be in better shape than the Texans for the duration of Brock Osweiler’s deal.
