Cleveland Browns "Moving Forward" on Robert Griffin III, not Talking Trade for Colin Kaepernick

It looks like there is a decent chance that Robert Griffin III could be the next name on that Browns’ list of starting quarterbacks since they came back in the league in 1999. Griffin met with the Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson over the weekend.

"“It was a great meeting. I think he’s obviously a tremendous talent and a great young man,” Jackson told NFL Media’s Steve Wyche. “He had a lot of success early in Washington and then things just didn’t work out. Those things happen in the National Football League.’"

This morning, Mary Kay Cabot reports that the Browns are “moving forward on possibly signing quarterback Robert Griffin.” There are some hedges there, but that comes directly from meeting with Jackson and the team leadership at the NFL Owners meeting. According to Cabot, the Browns also said they are not “actively engaged” in trade talks with the 49ers for Colin Kaepernick.

Then, you also have the issue of whether the Browns want one of the quarterbacks in the draft and how sold they are on either of them. You would think that Griffin’s contract would be enough to make a team not want to make a further large investment of resources (either draft pick or money) at the same position.

Is this the best move for Griffin? Is it the only move? He might, practically, be better served to move to a top organization even if it means backing up for a year, but that’s not happening if someone will pay him starter money. Hue Jackson is a really good quarterback coach, and has worked well with Andy Dalton and Carson Palmer in recent years. On the other hand, it’s the Browns, and they have a graveyard of quarterbacks left in their wake.
