Geno Auriemma: There Are "A Lot Better Writers Than Dan Shaughnessy"
By Ty Duffy
UConn is obliterating the Women’s NCAA Tournament. The Huskies have won their first three games by an average of 53 points. They are playing for their fourth-straight National Championship. Since the 2013-14 season, UConn has a record of 113-1.
Notable Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy tweeted that UConn was killing the women’s game.
UConn coach Geno Auriemma was asked about Shaughnessy’s comment. Auriemma responded “don’t watch.” He likened his team’s dominance to Tiger Woods’ impact on golf. He noted there are “a lot of writers better than Dan Shaughnessy.”
Shaughnessy’s comment was sweeping. Though, Twitter’s 140-character limit allows little room for nuance and making pithy observations about sports is Shaughnessy’s job.
Auriemma may have a point. “Live and let live” is a laudable life strategy. Of course, it’s advice Geno himself has failed to heed. Nearly a year ago today, Auriemma piped in with a sweeping comment about the men’s game, terming it “a joke.”
"I think the game is a joke. It really is. I don’t coach it. I don’t play it, so I don’t understand all the ins and outs of it. But as a spectator, forget that I’m a coach, as a spectator, watching it, it’s a joke. There’s only like ten teams, you know, out of 25, that actually play the kind of game of basketball that you’d like to watch."
This dispute should be settled as all blowhard quibbles should: no holds barred cage match for charity.
