J.J. Watt was on “In the Loop” with John Lopez and Nick Wright, talking about a wide range of topics. One of the things that came up was Watt’s tackle on the stage at a Zac Brown Band concert last summer, that went viral.

It was pretty clearly scripted, and at around the 18 minute mark, they talked about the tackle, and Watt confirmed that they planned it before the concert. Watt provided other details.

The guy who took the hit was Zac Brown’s sound guy, and he volunteered and was like “I want to take the hit, let me take the hit.” Before Watt would do it, though, he got the guy to say on video “I want to take the hit from J.J. Watt as hard as he can, I will not sue. There will be no repercussions.” Watt said he still has that on his phone.

Good thing, too, because according to Watt, he saw Brown on tour later in the year, and the guy told him that he discovered three months later, when he was still hurting, that he had a broken rib from the tackle. Just like professional wrestling, it may be scripted, but that doesn’t mean it can’t hurt.
