Wisconsin High School Students Shout Racist Taunts During Soccer Match

Officials from Elkhorn Area School District in Wisconsin are investigating allegations of racist taunts shouted during a girls soccer match on Thursday. Members of the Beloit Memorial High School soccer team claim students from Elkhorn showered them with racial slurs during the contest. Elkhorn officials have admitted that some students did yell “inappropriate/offensive comments.”

Beloit coach Brian Denu claims the Elkhorn students targeted the black and Latina girls on his team with pointed racial slurs and chants like “Donald Trump, build that wall.”

Denu was left trying to console his players as the chants had a huge impact on them:

"“They came off the field and weren’t able to finish the game because they were too upset and distraught over what happened to them. One of the girls was cradled in the arms of one of our assistant coaches for a good 15 to 20 minutes.”"

While the chants apparently came from just a small group of Elkhorn students, they still had a major impact on the players who heard them.

Denu continued:

"“I could just see the hurt and pain on their face and know that this was obviously something that they hadn’t seen before. You know, it was from a small pocket of the Elkhorn fans, but those words are things you can’t take back. “As a white male, I can’t tell them I know what this is like, I know how you feel, because that’s never happened to me. But I wanted them to know that we were there to support them, we were there to fight for them, and we’re going to get through everything together.”"

Jason Tadlock, Elkhorn’s district administrator, says the investigation is ongoing and promised to comment as soon as it was completed. He did confirm that there were, indeed, some inappropriate comments emanating from the Elkhorn students.

This is just an awful story. It’s 2016, can’t we finally be over this crap? Racism is not funny, and racist jokes are even less funny. In fact they are lazy and completely lack any creativity.
