Conor McGregor Would Be So Good in WWE, But Possibility Still Premature

Conor McGregor created quite the stir when he tweeted he was retiring young earlier this afternoon. Because the announcement, if that’s what we’re calling it, came out of nowhere, and because all sides have been mum for several hours now, speculation abounds.

For a variety of reasons, there is rampant rumor mongering that the brash Irishman could be headed to WWE. These are a few public breadcrumbs:

1) McGregor recently followed much of the McMahon clan on Twitter:

2) Female wrestler Becky Lynch, who also hails from Ireland, sent a recruitment tweet today:

3) McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh – who after the retirement missive tweeted, “Well was fun while it lasted” – just went on social media and made a joke about adopting the uniform of legendary pro wrestling manager Jimmy Hart:

McGregor cuts primo promos, and even though he lost the last time he was in the octagon his previous success in UFC would give him instant credibility in WWE, even if he’s smaller than most of their performers. Whether or not this is something he’d be contractually permitted to do – he’d already signed on for a rematch against Nate Diaz at UFC 200 – who the hell knows?

No matter what happens next, the fact that and manner in which everything today arose out of a single tweet is surreal, and very wrestling-esque. Would I bet on McGregor arriving in WWE anytime in 2016? No, probably not. However, there is way too much money in the possibility of him in pro wrestling to declare that it would never happen.
