Jacoby Ellsbury's Steal of Home Was Awesome, But Made No Sense

Ellsbury, who previously swiped home against the Yankees in 2009, took advantage of a long windup by Matt Moore on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the fifth inning.

Joe Girardi said he gave the green light from the dugout. At the risk of ruining a great moment, I’ll point out that the risk was far greater than the reward. A thrown strike from Moore would have ended the inning and taken the bat out of Brett Gardner’s hands. There was also a trail runner on second base so a hit would have scored two runs.

Had Ellsbury stayed put and a ball was delivered, the Yankees would have had the bases loaded.

But again, it was cool. Let’s not get bogged down in the bizarre strategy of it all.
