Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert are teaming up to bring MLS to Detroit. Gilbert is a Michigan native, lives in Metro Detroit, and has been investing heavily in Detroit real estate.

"The plan includes building a soccer stadium at a still-to-be-determined site. A source says the abandoned Wayne County jail site on Gratiot near Greektown is the No. 1 option, although the site remains under county control. Other possible sites include land near the Detroit riverfront or maybe even the Corktown area."

Detroit doesn’t have a team. But, while MLS has been thirsting over glamor destinations such as Miami and…Sacramento, Detroit’s fourth-tier club Detroit City FC sells out its 3,500 seat stadium. Manchester United and Real Madrid drew more than 100,000 fans in Ann Arbor.

There is land to be had downtown. The market for it exists. There is at least one guaranteed season ticket holder writing this article. Please get this done and make sure there is Bell’s beer on tap.
