The 2016 NFL Draft didn’t really get started until the third pick and the San Diego Chargers pulled out a bit of a surprise, taking Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa. While Bosa was one of the highest rated players on most boards, many expected San Diego to select Ronnie Stanley, DeForest Buckner or defensive back Jalen Ramsey. But no, general manager Tom Telesco opted for Bosa.

Quite frankly, Bosa is a terrible fit for San Diego’s defense. The Chargers run a 3-4, Bosa is a 4-3 defensive end. Bosa runs a 4.85 40, which means he likely won’t be a pure pass rusher and there’s almost no way he can play outside linebacker in the 3-4.

Bucker and Ramsey were certainly better fits unless Bosa can gain about 25 pounds and play as a 3-4 defensive end. The pick just doesn’t make a ton of sense even though Bosa is solid player.

When you look at it, the Chargers could have traded down a few picks and likely still gotten the Ohio State product.
