Mike Francesa Laid Waste to Rick DiPietro, Former Islanders Goalie Turned NY Sports Talker

Last week, Mike Francesa called the Islanders a “third-rate organization” in terms of promotions. Word got back to Rick DiPietro, who was a goalie for the team for 10 years and now hosts a radio show with Alan Hahn on ESPN’s New York radio affiliate, and he called Francesa a fatso.
Francesa came back with the heat of a thousand suns, referencing DiPietro’s under .500 career record, adding the team was dumb to be paying him through 2029 and that his own radio ratings are about eight times as high. Francesa closed: “Stick to a league you can compete in. Tackling me in the radio business? You’re you, and I’m Gordie Howe, so clam up.”
This isn’t quite as momentous as dropping the Mink Man on Michael Kay, but it’s a good reminder that the day Francesa no longer lords over the New York airwaves will be a profoundly sad one.
