Los Angeles Angels ace Garrett Richards needs Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the season, according to a report from Yahoo Sports. The loss of the hard-throwing righthander is the latest blow to the team’s chances. Fellow pitcher Andrew Heaney is currently on the disabled list and there are rumors that his injury is more significant than previously reported.

Richards is 1-3 with a 2.34 ERA in six starts this year. He’s posted a 28-16 record and a 3.18.

Making matters worse, the Angels traded two pitching prospects, Sean Newcombe and Chris Ellis, away in the offseason in exchange for Andrelton Simmons.
