Penn State’s board of trustees approved alcohol sales, pending a liquor license, at Beaver Stadium and other athletics facilities. Rest assured. Only wealthier fans paying for premium seating will have access.

"Sales will occur only in private and controlled areas, including suites, club seats and reception areas, under the proposed policy that the 38-member board endorsed. In the case of football games, about 4,400 of the 107,000 fans would have access to alcohol purchases, said Sandy Barbour, university athletic director."

Ohio State had a similar pilot program for its affluent last season. Such efforts are probably trial balloons to hawk devil’s water to the hoi polloi. Texas made $1.8 million selling beer and wine last season.

Handwringing PSU trustees’ concerns were heeded. Part of the revenue will go “toward student affairs to promote alcohol awareness.”
