Curt Schilling went on the Dan Patrick Show this morning. He discussed his recent firing from ESPN for sharing over-the-top Facebook memes, and said a few things that he has said in other interviews, namely that he believes the network allows more leniency for left-leaning commentary than from the other side.

“I’m not a measured speaker,” Schilling said. “I never have been. I was told one of the reasons they hired me was that I was opinionated and that I spoke my opinion whether it went against the grain or not. That was the case right up until I spoke an opinion they didn’t agree with.”

Schilling said that his son is active in the LGBT community, and that his son has hosted gay and transgendered teens in his house without issue, as evidence that he is not bigoted. However, it is still unclear whether he understands the difference between sexuality and gender identification, at least not in the sense of how the meme that broke the camel’s back was received.

Schilling also said that he was making $2.5 million a year at ESPN – that sounds like a lot off the top of our heads, and it would be fascinating to see a comprehensive list of which former athletes in media make what – but that he didn’t need the money to feed and shelter his family. He said that if he had, he might have been more careful about expressing himself.
