Reche Caldwell, former NFL receiver most famously known for playing with the New England Patriots, is serving time in a minimum security prison in Florida. ESPN has the deeper story on Caldwell, who only faces a 27-month sentence, and is soon to be eligible for work release, because he was a really bad criminal.

Caldwell was arrested for intent to distribute MDMA (Molly), after he–according to his own words in the story–Googled how to buy Molly and ordered the pills through a Chinese company by searching “Molly-MDMA-China.” He then tracked that shipment on an app on his phone, and signed for it when a federal agent dressed as a delivery person came to his door. The best paragraph of the piece:

"TO THIS DAY, Caldwell isn’t sure how authorities took down his drug cartel so swiftly. Perhaps it was the poorly stuffed shoebox-sized package wrapped in elaborate Chinese markings that sounded like a Molly-stuffed maraca moving down the post office’s conveyor belt. “Good lord that boy was a bad criminal,” says his mom, “and thank Jesus for that.”"

His attorney was also able to get a drastically reduced sentence because the drugs he actually purchased were a poor quality knockoff and didn’t meet the requirements for higher sentencing standards. In addition, Caldwell also ran an illegal gambling spot in Tampa Bay, right across from a school (and according to the story, the NFL may have been the first to notify local authorities). He was busted for that as well, but got off with time served while awaiting sentencing on the drug charges because the cost of prosecution outweighed the penalties.
