Rougned Odor socked Jose Bautista in the jaw after a confrontation at second base on Sunday. The Toronto Blue Jays slugger says the punch came as a surprise. But it really shouldn’t have. The Rangers second baseman has a history of double-play-related violence.

He was involved in a minor league brawl in 2011 that bears a striking resemblance to what happened yesterday. Odor, then a member of the Spokane Indians, slid in hard against the Vancouver Canadians. He and the opposing shortstop exchanged words before Odor broke out what is apparently his trademark move.

Shove. Then punch.

Odor was the aggressor. Judging by his low throw and willingness to throw hands five years later, apparently not much has changed.

He is a guy willing to fight, and take the fight to someone else.

And I’m not so sure it has anything to do with the integrity of his game or health. His 2011 slide was needlessly aggressive. Here he is last year with a slide 20 times as dirty on a force play.

It’s very possible Odor just really enjoys punching people in the face and is reluctant to pass up any opportunity to do so.

Major League opponents should be armed with this knowledge for future encounters.
