Cody Rhodes, the son of legendary pro wrestler Dusty Rhodes and a 10-year veteran of WWE, asked for and received his release from the organization this week. He issued this statement on Twitter:

The statement made it pretty clear that he always disdained the Stardust gimmick, where he spent a little over the past year painted up as something of a complement character to his real-life half-brother, Goldust. Rhodes says he persistently begged off this gimmick, to no avail.

The most damning aspect of his statement is the unnamed writer of Raw and Smackdown who allegedly was “too busy hitting on developmental divas” to listen to Rhodes’ pleas.

The peak of Rhodes’ run in WWE was probably when he won the Intercontinental championship in 2011, and held the belt for about eight months.

It goes without saying that professional wrestling is an abnormally cutthroat industry. The physical demands and the travel certainly contribute, but on the highest level in the world your success or lack thereof can be almost totally attributable to the agendas of a very small inner circle, and, ultimately, as Rhodes says, Triple H and Vince McMahon.
