Anthony Davis Misses Out On $24 Million By Not Landing On All-NBA Team
Anthony Davis has to be the world’s most depressed multi-millionaire athlete today. The 23-year-old New Orleans Pelicans forward missed out on being named to one of the three All-NBA teams, and as a result he missed out on an enormous chunk of cash.
If Davis had made one of the teams, he would have earned an extra $24 million on the max contract he signed last summer. The provision, known as the “Derrick Rose rule,” says that if a player on a rookie contract makes the All-Star game twice, is voted to three All-NBA teams or wins an MVP award, he can make 30 percent of the league’s cap instead of 25 percent. That would have equaled $24 million over the life of the contract extension he signed in the summer of 2015.
Don’t cry too hard for Davis though, he’ll still make $120 million over the five years of his extension. But, any time you miss out on an enormous amount of money like that it’s a huge blow.
Davis was shut down for the final 14 games of the 2015-16 season thanks to a long-lingering shoulder injury. He averaged 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. He wound up garnering 76 points in the voting (including one first-team vote). LaMarcus Aldridge edged him out, earning 103 points and three first-team votes. Aldridge averaged 18.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game for the second-best team in the league, so it’s hard to argue with his inclusion.
Still, Davis has to feel a little peeved as missing those last 14 games probably cost him a spot on one of the teams.
