Baylor Dismisses Devin Chafin, Who Allegedly Assaulted Woman Multiple Times
Baylor has confirmed it dismissed running back Devin Chafin after the spring semester. Chafin was arrested in March after he and a woman were caught bringing back marijuana from Colorado after a spring break trip. The university suspended him after the arrest, but not after he was alleged to have assaulted a woman multiple times back in 2014.
Chafin was named in a May Outside The Lines report concerning Baylor and the Waco Police Department’s handling of crimes committed by the school’s football players. In the report, Chafin is cited for assaulting a woman on at least two occasions times.
The OTL report said the following:
"In the April 2014 case, a woman told Waco police that Bears running back Devin Chafin grabbed her arm and slammed it against a car, in front of teammates and another witness. She provided photos of bruises on her arm to police. She told police that, weeks earlier, Chafin had grabbed her by the throat and slammed her against a wall, then threw her to the floor and kicked her, according to a police report. In the police report, the officer wrote that the woman was uncertain about pressing charges, and no legal action was taken. Chafin played in nine of 13 games the following season, including the season opener."
Chafin was suspended for spring practice thanks to the marijuana arrest, but was reinstated to the team after the spring by now-former head coach Art Briles.
Maybe this is the first domino in many to fall on Baylor’s roster following the scathing Pepper Hamilton report on the university’s handling of its football program. Or maybe Chafin is just the unlucky guy who is being made an example of and now it will be back to business as usual. We’ll have to wait and see.
What is clear is that Chafin, and a number of other Baylor players, should have been kicked off the team long ago.
