Vanderbilt freshman pitcher Donny Everett drowned at a Tennessee lake Thursday night. The 19-year-old threw only 12 innings this year but was a top player in the Commodores’ recruiting class.

“Donny certainly falls in line of the premier pitchers that we have been fortunate to get out of the state of Tennessee,” coach Tim Corbin said of Everett on his player bio. “He has overriding arm strength with the ability to throw consistent strikes. His future is bright and it is only a matter of time before he impacts our staff.”

Corbin informed his players and coaches of the tragedy at a team meeting. Vanderbilt is scheduled to host Xavier in an NCAA Regional game Friday night.

"Vanderbilt spokesman Rod Williamson said the status of Friday’s game has not yet been decided because the university is still gathering information and athletics director David Williams is traveling back from the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla."

The incident comes almost exactly a year after former Vanderbilt basketball player Dai-Jon Parker drowned in Indiana.
