Umpire Paul Emmel suffered a gruesome head wound during the ninth inning of Thursday’s Oakland-Los Angeles game. Emmel, who was working behind the plate, was struck with Jefry Marte’s bat after the Angels infielder lost it on his follow-through. The contact opened up a sizable head wound, suggesting Emmel was cut with his own mask. He was transported to the hospital for stitches but is doing okay.
