Icelandic Broadcaster Goes Absolutely Nuts As Iceland Tops England
Iceland beat England 2-1 during the Round of 16 at Euro 2016 on Monday to cap off what has been a rough few days for the Brits. While the English were devastated by the loss, everyone even remotely tied to Iceland was jubilant. That includes a play-by-play man for the team’s home broadcast, who went absolutely batty when his country won.
Gudmundur Benediktsson, who caused a stir when he went nuts during Iceland’s win over Austria, did it again on Monday. Benediktsson recently lost his job as the assistant manager of KR Reykjavik, but something tells me he doesn’t care much about that today.
Here’s his reaction to the goal that put Iceland ahead 2-1 in the 18th minute:
" Den isländske kommentatorn är tillbaka. Lyssna på den hysteriska glädjen vid 2-1 till Island ❤ pic.twitter.com/Qv6anSvhyv — Ehsan Fadakar (@ehsanfadakar) June 27, 2016 "
And here’s what he had to say as the final whistle blew:
" Icelandic commentary King at full time. “You can leave Europe! You can go wherever the hell you want!”pic.twitter.com/i8Dj2dFeeZ — Chris Deeley (@ThatChris1209) June 27, 2016 "
Chris Deeley, a writer for Yahoo! and The Huffington Post claims somewhere in there Benediktsson said “You can leave Europe! You can go wherever the hell you want!” I can’t confirm or deny that since I haven’t brushed up on my Icelandic in quite a while. Still, that’s a funny quote, especially when you consider Iceland actually withdrew its application for membership to the European Union.
We’ll Benediktsson a pass on that though since his call was a joy to listen to in any language.
