Muirfield Golf Club Will Vote Again on Whether or Not to Allow Women to Join

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield Golf Club, who voted in May to continue to excluding women as members, is now going to vote again. The club received a lot of harsh criticism, rightly so, from many, including Rory McIlroy, who urged the club to, “see some sense.”

The R&A, the governing body of European golf, reacted by pulling the club from the Open Championship rotation. A two-thirds majority vote was required to allow women to join, but only 64% voted yes, and despite over half of the club being in favor of allowing women to become members, the club stood by their so called “rules.”

Now they will be voting again on the same issue.

"Via ESPN: “A substantial majority of our members voted for change and many have voiced their disappointment with the ballot result and with subsequent events,” said HCEG captain Henry Fairweather. “The club committee believes that a clear and decisive vote in favour of admitting women as members is required to enable us to begin the task of restoring the reputation of the club that has been damaged by the earlier ballot outcome.”"

Hopefully they will, “see some sense,” and recognize that in order to grow the game of golf, all members of society who can afford dues should also be at least considered for membership.
