Daniel Berger is, now was, competing in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational this week at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Berger won three weeks ago at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. On Thursday during the opening round of the Bridgestone Invitational, Berger withdrew after just one shot citing a shoulder injury.

Many of you may be thinking, “What good does that do him to go and hit just one shot and then withdraw?”

Well, the last place finisher in any World Golf Championship event wins $50,000; so Berger went, hit the one shot, and will now collect his $50k. His withdrawal would not have prevented anyone else from entering the field, so it seems like he made a pretty smart decision.

Berger’s last appearance in a WGC event ended with a withdrawal also.
