Timofey Mozgov, the Cleveland benchwarmer who made six baskets during their glorious postseason run to the title last season, just signed a mind-boggling 4-year, $64 million deal with the Lakers.

This is absurd on many levels, and feels fake, but it’s not. Mozgov, who turns 30 this month, has never averaged more than 25 minutes a night. He’s an upgrade from their center last year, Roy Hibbert, but that’s not saying much. He’s a 3rd-tier rim protector in this year’s free agency crop.

Oh my have the Lakers fallen.

Could the Lakers not get a meeting with the NBA’s leading shot blocker, Hassan Whiteside? What happened to Bismack Biyombo, who is younger and more athletic and had a strong postseason in Toronto? He had three double-doubles in 20 games, and collected 26 boards in a game against the Cavs.

The Lakers have a lot of cap room but it seems like the move is: Let’s save it for next year, when we can get Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook! If that fails?

Don’t ask.
