Kevin Durant announced his decision to spurn his longtime home Oklahoma City for the Golden State Warriors on the 4th of July. ESPN’s Royce Young published a story on Tuesday about all the factors that led to Durant’s change of heart and team. Buried deep in the article – past the anecdote about the crying child who doesn’t understand the fwee mawket ? – is a tidbit about the OKC contingent in The Hamptons waiting for Durant’s final decision. With the area packed with tourists, owner Clay Bennett was forced to share a hotel room and eat at a chain restaurant. Via ESPN:

"They didn’t have anywhere to stay, and with the Fourth of July weekend a hectic time in the Hamptons, lodging was hard to come by. So the Thunder holed up at a Holiday Inn Express, located one mile away from Durant’s compound, and waited. There were only six rooms available for nine people, so they shared. Clay Bennett, a multimillion-dollar owner, in a Holiday Inn Express, sharing a bed. Nothing was open, so they settled on a T.G.I. Friday’s for a late dinner."

Did they tell him? Did they even tell Durant about the sacrifice made for him? A hotel chain that advertises on television? A restaurant with something called “endless appetizers?” I can’t see Joe Lacob doing that. Maybe because the Warriors are so advanced they would book hotel reservations before getting to town, but still.
