Michael Irvin Went Crazy Arguing for Luke Kuechly Over J.J. Watt Because of Wins

Michael Irvin was discussing the top NFL players, and went a little crazy embracing debate last night when it came to Luke Kuechly and J.J. Watt. (h/t: Black and Blue Review).

The gist of it, if I can try to find one, is that Luke Kuechly is better because his team wins more. “I don’t want you to just play well on the field, and raise your hand and win a bunch of awards, I want your playing well on the field to result in some significant changes in wins and losses that will get me into a playoff and Super Bowl,” Irvin said. “And that’s what Luke Kuechly does with the Panthers.”

Irvin then launched into a nonsensical point about defense doesn’t win championships, but that defenses that score points when championships. For what it’s worth, J.J. Watt and Luke Kuechly both have three defensive touchdowns in their careers. Hardly the method by which you would prove that they are two of the best defensive players in the league. (And the last team to win a Super Bowl while leading in defensive touchdowns? 2009 New Orleans Saints).

Luke Kuechly and J.J. Watt are both fantastic players. It’s a little disheartening when someone who has played the game falls back on this to criticize Watt: “Who’s fault is it if they are not winning, and he’s the star of the team?”

Come on, man.
