LeBron James reassured a legion of nervous Cavaliers fans that he would return to defend the team’s title with a comment on the day of the championship parade. When he’ll put pen to paper, however, is anyone’s guess. James has yet to give the Cavs a timetable for his re-signing, according to a report from Cleveland.com.

Thursday was the first day free agents were able to sign contracts and yet Cavs team officials haven’t heard back from James. At the same time, James’ agent, Rich Paul, has informed interested teams that his client is returning to Cleveland.

James has made a habit of empowering himself as a player and it appears he’s exercising that power once again. One has to believe that he’s approving every move the team makes ie Mike Dunleavy.

It’s easy to believe he’s waiting to sign until all of the other pieces are in place. And that’s a smart strategy to ensure the organization moves in the direction he desires. There’s also a belief among many that James enjoys making Dan Gilbert sweat.

For now, it seems Cavs fans — who have been burned in the past — are keeping their heads, knowing James will be back. No one will care how long it took for him to re-sign once he does. He’s a special player who has earned the right to move at his own pace, even if that’s slower than Cleveland brass would prefer.
