Portugal brought on Eder as a substitute. He scored in the second half of extra time to win Euro 2016 for Portugal. They are the best European nation without a major tournament win no more. It is a massive disappointment for hosts France.
Expansion to 24 teams was controversial. A winner that drew six of its seven matches in regulation and slipped through to the knockout stages in third place won’t diminish that controversy.
France will rue some missed chances and scheduling that saw them play a Sunday final after a Thursday semifinal.
One can question the artistry and ambition of Portugal. One can’t question their resilience. They withstood an early French barrage. They were the better side from the point Cristiano Ronaldo went down with an injury. They made the better substitutions. Porutgal won the day and deserved to.
