Michigan State cornerback Jermaine Edmondson has been given full release of his scholarship and will transfer, the team announced on Wednesday.

Police reports say Edmondson is the player at the center of the Draymond Green assault arrest last weekend.

An Ohio-based attorney released a statement Wednesday on behalf of Green’s victim, claiming the student-athlete’s “life has been forever altered” by a “unprovoked, unnecessary attack.”

It’s unclear what role, if any, the situation with Green factored into Edmonson’s decision.

"“In discussions with Jermaine Edmondson following spring practice and in the weeks thereafter, it became clear that Jermaine wanted to play a larger role on the team, ” coach Mark Dantonio said. “After consulting with him in the summer, he felt it was in his best interest to finish his playing career elsewhere. We have granted his immediate release to transfer to another institution to have that opportunity.”"

Edmonson played in all 14 games last season, registering 25 tackles. He was expected to have a diminished role moving forward with the Spartans bringing in several top secondary recruits.
