Phil Mickelson just tied history, but he almost made it.

Mickelson, who is now eight-under, leads the 145th Open Championship by three strokes, but that’s not even the important part of this story so let’s begin.

On the par-5 16th hole, Mickelson found himself up against the face of one of the ruthless bunkers at Royal Troon, so in true Lefty fashion he knocked it to around eight feet with ease and, yes, he made the putt for birdie to get to seven-under.

Mickelson then birdied the par-3 17th to get to eight-under 63.

After his drive flirted with a bunker in the left hand rough; Mickelson hit from 179 yards to 16 feet. He then stepped up and came as close to sinking his birdie putt for a record setting 62 as one can get.

Ridiculous.

Mickelson’s last major win was the 2013 Open Championship hosted at Muirfield.

Mickelson’s caddie Bones had the proper reaction.
