LeBron James has informed the Cleveland Cavaliers that he will, indeed, re-sign with them, but appears to be in no hurry to ink a deal. So that nervous tension you’re sensing from Cleveland this week isn’t just the city bracing for chaos at the Republican National Convention, it’s also coming from Cavs fans ready for “King James” to finally sign a contract.

We all knew LeBron would be back in Cleveland. He made that clear after bringing home the Larry O’Brien Trophy. But James is going to take his time and consider specific contract options with his agent before making a decision on money and years. In all likelihood, he’ll sign another two-year deal with a player option for the second season. That means he can opt out again next summer and maximize his salary each year. It looks like that might be the standard operating procedure for top players moving forward.

James is back in Cleveland, brought a title home to his home state and can pretty much write his ticket there for the rest of his life. There might be a late-career shift to another city, but Cavs fans can rest easy as far as next year is concerned.

Now Cleveland can turn its full attention to re-signing J.R. Smith.
