The Minnesota Twins have fired longtime general manager Terry Ryan, the team announced. Assistant general manager Rob Antony will assume the role on an interim basis.

Ryan joined the Twins organization in 1972. This was his second stint as general manager (1994-2007; 2011-present). His first go-around yielded four division titles in the 2000s and he twice won Baseball America’s Major League Baseball Executive of the Year Award.

The backbone of the Twins’ success during that time was a strong farm system and development of young talent. The reservoir has dried up in recent years and the franchise is looking at the possibility of not cracking the 70-win mark for the fifth time in six seasons.

A recent spate of unsuccessful moves has derailed what many expected to be a competitive year.
