Jimmy Walker continued the streak of first time major winners with his win at the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol. He joins Jason Day, Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson, and Henrik Stenson.

Walker, ranked 48th in the official world golf rankings, had not won a tournament this year and had missed four cuts in his last eight events, including at the U.S. Open and Open Championship. Walker held off a charging Jason Day who, after Henrik Stenson made double bogey on the par-4 15th, was the only player capable of catching him. Day almost did as he made a spectacular eagle on the 72nd hole to get to within one-stroke of Walker.

" An eagle … at the 72nd hole … during Round 4 … of a major … while in contention. Yes, please.#QuickHits https://t.co/13ixwMGJEr — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 31, 2016 "

Walker won two tournaments in 2015 and three in 2014. His best finish in a major came in 2014 at the PGA Championship when he finished tied for seventh; he also finished tied for eighth in the Masters and tied for ninth in the U.S. Open that year.

Henrik Stenson was attempting to become only the second player to win two majors in the same month; the last was Gene Sarazen in 1932.

Walker also took a page from Jason Dufner’s book and gave his wife Erin a tap on the tush.

Final Thought

And now we won’t have another major until April 6, 2017.

Thanks a lot Olympics.

Luckily it’s a Ryder Cup year. Unfortunately that doesn’t start until September 30th.
