Marlins Sending Colin Rea Back To Padres After Elbow Injury In First Start
Colin Rea didn’t last long with the Miami Marlins. The 26-year-old was part of a seven-player trade between the Marlins and San Diego Padres over the weekend and made his first start for Miami on Saturday. Well, that will be the length of his career with the Marlins, as an injury has the team shipping him back to San Diego.
Rea left his first start with the Marlins in the fourth inning after feeling discomfort in his elbow. He was placed on the disabled list and Miami will now send him back to the Padres. Apparently, Marlins brass isn’t happy about it.
The Padres will send one of the minor leaguers they acquired from Miami back to the team to complete the deal. The Marlins are keeping Andrew Cashner and the Friars will keep the rest of the players they received.
To defend the Padres, it’s not like they knew Rea was injured. He went six innings in his final two starts with the club. Plus, isn’t this the kind of thing that should be noticed during a physical before a trade is accepted?
This has to be one of the oddest turns that’s ever happened at baseball’s trade deadline.
Also worth noting: the Padres received prospect Chris Paddack from the Marlins in exchange for Fernando Rodney earlier in the season. Paddack recently tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and is headed for Tommy John surgery. The moral of the story? If you’re a young pitcher, never get traded between the Marlins and Padres.
