DeAndre Hopkins ended his brief holdout over the weekend, and many assumed that meant a new contract was forthcoming. On Tuesday, Houston Texans owner Bob McNair addressed the situation claiming the team would “take care of” his young wideout.

McNair had the following to say:

"“I’m happy that he’s back. I think it’s in his best interest for him to be here. “We’ll deal with his contract at the proper time. We take care of our players and we’ll take care of him.”"

“At the proper time” is the key section of that quote. So when, exactly will that be?

The Texans almost never give extensions to players with more than a year left on their deals, and Hopkins currently has two left on his. This year he’s set to make just $1 million in base salary, and will make a paltry $9.36 million over the next two seasons. That’s absurdly low considering his production.

Hopkins caught 111 passes for 1,521 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2015. He was a huge part of Houston’s offense despite terrible play from the team’s quarterbacks. He’s easily the Texans’ top offensive weapon, and was targeted on a ridiculous 31.6 percent of the team’s passes.

J.J. Watt is the only player general manager Rick Smith has given a new contract to when there were multiple years left on his deal. The Texans had better make the same exception for Hopkins, because if they don’t he would be right to have a protracted holdout in the future.

Until Houston decides to give him a new deal, the 24-year-old wideout will continue to be football’s best bargain.
