LeBron James will star in Space Jam 2. The much-anticipated sequel to the hit 1996 movie starring Michael Jordan promises to make big bucks riding the always en vogue nostalgia train.

But it appears Jordan himself would prefer a different NBA star have the lead role.

When asked by a basketball camp attendee, Jordan expressed his desire to see Blake Griffin get top billing.

Griffin is an accomplished comedic actor and has been working with Funny or Die. He has the public standing and chops to carry the movie. There’s also another reasonable explanation for why MJ would name the Clippers forward: a shared interest in furthering the Jordan brand.

Griffin is a Jordan Brand athlete. James is not.

James proved competent in a significant role in Trainwreck. His star burns much brighter than Griffin’s. Your grandmother probably knows about LeBron. She may not be familiar with Griffin’s name.

While Jordan is an intense competitor interested in preserving his place in history above James, we’re choosing to see his answer as a business decision and not a piece of intentional shade.

The truth of the matter is that both James and Griffin are far better actors than Jordan. The original Space Jam succeeded for many reasons. Jordan’s on-screen performance is nowhere near the top of the list.

His Hanes commercials, of course, are a different story. Those are truly high art.
