Alex Morgan and Christen Press Miss Penalties, Sweden Advances

The USWNT won’t be going on a gold medal victory tour. They did not even reach the medal rounds, losing to Sweden on penalties in a 1-1 draw after the quarterfinals.

The U.S. had won four of the five previous gold medals at the Olympics, losing in the final for silver in 2000. Coming off the World Cup triumph in 2015, it’s safe to say this was a massive disappointment.

That result was probably fair. Sweden had a completely legitimate goal late in extra time ruled offside.

Not sure there’s too much to read into here about the state of U.S. Women’s Soccer. Tournaments can be tough. Sometimes the luck runs your way. Sometimes it doesn’t.
