While golf was considered by many not to be an Olympic sport, it definitely didn’t disappoint this week in Rio. Two major champions were in a dual to the end. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who won his first major in an epic showdown with Phil Mickelson last month, battled it out with 2013 U.S. Open winner, Great Britain’s Justin Rose.
Heading into the 72nd hole, the two were tied at the top of the leaderboard at -15.
Justin Rose won the first gold medal awarded to a golfer since 1904 after the shot below on the final hole of the tournament.
American Matt Kuchar, who didn’t know the format of the games, finished alone in third place at -13, earning a bronze medal. Afterwards Kuchar had this to say about the Olympic experience: “I can’t explain the pride to you that’s just busting out of my chest…to make an Olympics and medal is just amazing.”
