David Katoatau, the Dancing Weightlifter, Might Be the Best Olympian

David Katoatau is a 5’5″, 205-pound weightlifter from Kiribati, a group of tiny islands, the home of just over 100,000 people,¬†south of Hawaii, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I had never heard of that place or that guy before I saw this gif this morning.

Now I know where Kiribati is and I know that they sent three athletes to the 2016 Olympics and one of those athletes is David Katoatau. Katoatau finished 6th in the Men’s 105kg Group B final. Katoatau is awesome because he dances after every lift – successful or not. NBC has video of the celebrations. Katoatau says he dances to raise awareness of his country, which could be completely wiped out by climate change¬†within the next 100 years.

on Day 10 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Riocentro - Pavilion 2 on August 15, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
