Earlier this week, Bryce Harper held Katie Ledecky’s impressive haul of Olympic medals as she tossed a ceremonial first pitch. People seemed to like it. Chuckles were had.
Aly Raisman and David Ortiz, keen observers of the comedic landscape, picked up on this and combined to put together an entertaining bit Friday night at Fenway Park. The highly decorated gymnast put medal after medal around the retiring slugger’s neck until he couldn’t support the weight.
If you’re skeptical that Ortiz was faking it, remember he is so frail that playing first base, one of the easiest positions on the diamond, has been too taxing for him for years.
The moment made me wonder how long Olympians have to carry around their baubles after returning from the Games. A month? Until Thanksgiving? A year? One never knows when a person is going to want to see and touch it — or use it for prop comedy. Seems rude to deny them that opportunity.
