Colin Kaepernick has been at the center of an enormous controversy over the past few weeks concerning his refusal to stand during the national anthem. Many speculated that the San Francisco 49ers might just cut the highly-paid backup quarterback just to avoid drama. It looks like that won’t be happening.

Kaepernick appears set to make the 49ers roster and after head coach Chip Kelly said he was one of the team’s top two quarterbacks this decision makes sense.

Given that San Francisco will start the season with Blaine Gabbert under center, the team will definitely need a quality backup. Gabbert has a career passer rating of 71.9, with a completion percentage of 55.8 and 33 touchdowns against 31 interceptions in six NFL season. So yeah, no one should have confidence that he’ll be solid in the starting role.

Kaepernick is set to make $16.5 million this season, making him the most expensive insurance policy in football.
