With great power comes great responsibility. The ball boy working the left-field line during Monday’s Los Angeles Angels-Oakland A’s game understood this and took extraordinary measures to protect members of the home team’s bullpen from a Jefry Marte foul ball. Unfortunately, his flying dive came up empty and reliever Chris Smith was struck in the head after a ricochet.
Smith, who didn’t quite match the ball boy’s level of effort, threw down his towel in mock disgust because dudes busting each other’s chops is expected bullpen behavior. Deep down, we know he appreciated the hustle.
