Joey Bosa’s holdout has finally had some actual consequences. The No. 3 pick from the 2016 NFL Draft just finally got back with the San Diego Chargers after a lengthy contract stalemate, and thanks to his limited practice time he is going to wind up missing his team’s first game on Sunday.

Bosa had his leg wrapped as he was dealing with “tightness” and hasn’t been practicing every day. Second-year defensive lineman Darius Philon will start in his place.

This was fairly predictable. Bosa didn’t play in any preseason games and just finally hit the practice field last week. He spent almost the entire offseason away from the team and was back in his home state of Florida working out. While lifting and running through drills is a great way to keep your stamina up, it’s no match for actually hitting the field in full pads and facing real NFL competition.

It will likely be a few weeks before Bosa make any kind of real impact for the Chargers.
