On August 21st the Miami Marlins completed a 3-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marlins were in a Wild Card spot and were 3 games ahead of the New York Mets. Announced attendance for the Marlins next home game, a 1-0 loss to the Royals, was 18,513. The Marlins would lose 12 of their next 15.

The losing paused on Wednesday with a 6-0 win over the Phillies. A reported 16,592 people were in attendance on Invisibility Cloak Giveaway Night.

The Marlins are now 5 games behind the Mets and 4 teams are ahead of them in the Wild Card standings. Perhaps a 61% discount on ticket prices could have attracted actual thousands of people. Perhaps they can close the upper deck in their publicly-funded stadium to make it look like they did. What’s the point of having a sea creature race if no one is there to see it?
