The Miami Marlins played this somber rendition of Take Me Out to the Ballgame before this evening’s game against the Mets, in emotional remembrance of Jose Fernandez, who tragically died early Sunday morning in a boating accident.
Afterwards, Fernandez’s teammates each drew his number into the pitcher’s mound, and were embraced by members of the Mets.
After the ceremony, Dee Gordon led off for the Marlins, hit his first home run of the season, and embraced his teammates:
This tragedy continues to be a gutting reminder of how fleeting life can be.
